Ability to access DLNA server on a home network over the internet.
I realise this may require some port forwarding etc on the home side and I also don't know if DLNA servers can be accessed from outside their network. IF they can though, that would be cool.

DLNA and UPNP don't offer this functionality, but Skifta does, via a facility called 'shifting'.
If you have a home computer, install the Skifta client on it from http://www.skifta.com and once installed, log into that website. you should see you home machine listed with your DLNA device available as a source.
On your android client, choose 'select a source', click the 'remote' tab - and your DLNA server should be listed under there if it's also currently powered on.
Skifta comes readily available on readynas ultra series so you can just leave that NAS drive on to do shifting in the same manner... and many more devices coming soon ;-) -

Thought that might be the case.*sigh*
Not really keen to leave PC permanently on as it's quite effective at heating my room. I was thinking about upgrading my NAS soon anyway. May go with a ReadyNAS now.

Does your NAS run Linux? If so - you may be able to install Skifta directly on it.
Also - have you seen freenas?
If you've got an old PC - it is AMAZING. -

Please add remote control functionality built into Skifta. At the moment there appears to be some FF and Rew buttons. However when I am shifting videos on my Samsung TV these buttons "skip" to the next/ previous movie, rather than FF/ rew. The TV has built in controls, but it seems to work very poorly. FF causes the movie to buffer 5+ seconds to find out you only FF a few seconds ahead.
I envision this feature to have standard remote control features. FF, Rew, Pause, Play. If you wanted to get fancy you could have a few extra buttons for skip ahead/ rew x secs/ mins.
I have not gotten to use Skifta much because of the Android 3.1 streaming out side of your network bug. Will add more when I get an update ;p.

etatto (and a few others) have requested a feature to remove legacy phones and devices from the page: http://www.skifta.com/my-account
I'll add this to enhancements. -
Posted 1 year ago
When playing an album, it would be nice if track 2 buffered prior to track 1 ending so that track 2 could play directly on the heels of track 1 without a pause.
I noticed today because I was listening to an album with a lot of songs that bleed into one another.

I'll request that as an enhancement.

There are still update freezing issues on my device (htc desire). Possible having a timeout on the update request? then an option to retry or skip the update after timeout.

You really shouldn't be seeing these anymore - there *is* a time out. Have you freshly installed the latest version of beta 0.74?
-
Posted 1 year ago
Yup 0.74 freshly installed yesterday. It works when I disconnect from the internet i.e. using a static ip and not setting up the gateway and dns servers in the wifi settings. I can confirm that the wifi connection on the phone is working and fast, so I don't see why skifta would have a problem. The initial update worked fine and skifta has started successfully since then.. it's just intermitent

Ok - the wish list thread probably isn't the location for this discussion - if you see this again and can reproduce it, let us know the conditions and we'll investigate. Thanks for getting back to us.

We should probably raise a poll to find out what platforms subscribers would like to see Skifta on :-)
-
Posted 1 year ago
- Add queue functionality for music, so I can line up tracks.
- When scrolling through a huge list of artists/albums, it would be nice to be able to "grab the scroll bar" or whatever that thing is called. Just like in Contacts.
- Directory caching, so going back to the artist/album list won't take several seconds after having looked at the files in a folder.
- Setting to be able to enable/disable logging, so you could see what is going wrong when shifting is failing (see all other dlna controller apps).
- Remember media server and media renderer from last use and try to reconnect to them on start up.All observations done using a Nexus S

Thanks for these suggestions - keep watching the updates from the marketplace as it might just be that some of these features are coming ;-)

Ability to completely disable Skifta sharing on phone and use it as a player/viewer only. The Skifta sharing service stops the phone from going into sleep mode causing the battery to drain too quickly
-
Posted 1 year ago
I'm not really sure I understand what you mean otamayo - do you mean that you wish to disable Skifta's upnp sharing? Or you want to stop it connecting to the Skifta website? Or that you want to use it only on your local network? It's not clear to me. Thanks ! :-)

Hi Conal,
Maybe it's just me; I only want to use my ReadyNas to share my media. In Skifta under the media server settings, I can disable photos, videos and music. However, it still appears as a server just with no content, the problem is that with the Skifta media server service is still running so my HTC Desire HD will not go into sleep mode and therefore draining the battery.
When I launch the Skifta app I want to be able to access my media either on the local network or when remote but closing the app should close all services as well.I hope what I am trying to say this makes sense.
-

Hey Otamayo -
so 'how' are you closing the app?
You should use the home key to leave the application running in the background, or you should use 'menu' then 'exit' to close Skifta.. then it will still be available via the task manager, but all the services will be closed down. -
Posted 1 year ago
Thanks Conal; I knew it was just me! Using Exit from the menu does exactly what I want.
All I need now is to get Skifta working on my ReadyNas, Allan is looking into this for me.
Any plans to allow renaming/removing Skifta places from the My Account/My Connection tabs?

Ability to stream my live TV to my tablet.
Samsung have an app to do this.
-
Posted 1 year ago
What's the TV? If it acts as a media server and outputs a stream as UPNP or DLNA (which is unlikely) then it can be done.
Samsung's app is probably using some proprietary protocol, but if you let me know what the model is, I'll look into it. -

My TV is Samsung UE32D6530 with DLNA certificate
My 7" tablet/phone is Synrgic Dreambook W7 using Android 2.2 using Freescale IMX51_bbg
PC is Acer Aspire 8930G with DLNA certificate
They are all working well together with Skifta
There is a Samsung App which allows me to use my tablet as a remote control handset. They have another App which also includes to watch TV screen(TV tuner programs)on at least one of their phones, but it says my tablet is not compatible.

I had a look at that Samsung Smart TV app; one article says they're keeping that tech proprietary to stimulate the sales of Samsung tablets apparently. Slashgear / android community claim that it will be available on all android devices though [ http://androidcommunity.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-wireless-tv-streaming-hands-on-20110415/ ].
So - to the analysis:
It *IS* DLNA - it's basically the AllShare App working in reverse, with the TV becoming a DLNA server, serving out a live stream that gets transcoded by the app on the handset.I checked the manual and it doesn't list allowing you to set the TV to announce itself as a DLNA server. What this means is that Samsung have something in their client to turn on that live TV feature to announce itself via DLNA. The rest of the time it is only available as a renderer; the feature you are currently using.
If you can find some menu option to turn live tv 'on' as a DLNA server, then you will be able to use it with Skifta; otherwise, this feature is out of our hands - as it is under Samsung's control.

Thanks for you time and information.
I aven't been able to find an obvious way to turn on the TV as a DLNA server, but then this is not my speciality. I shall keep an eye on the link provided and releases.
I just found Samygo site is very interesting. Since the Samsung programming is in the public domain(linux), Samygo is working on varoius projects to access and modify TV's etc
-

Understood. As I say, I read the manual for this TV, there was no obvious way of turning the live stream into a DLNA source. All the evidence and documentation points to this being a proprietary app to activate this feature.

On my Droid X, I should be able to "flick" to the next photo when viewing a photo album. Right now you need to press the "forward button" that comes up when tapping the screen.
