It's likely that your network settings are not correctly setup.
CNet did a rather lovely video which shows you how to do this [ http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-20077603-285/how-to-stream-music-from-your-pc-to-android-remotely/ ]
You don't mention your OS, but I'm willing to bet it's a version of Windows that requires network discovery to be enabled.
Network discovery is a network setting that affects whether your computer can see (find) other computers and devices on the network and whether other computers on the network can see your computer. By default, Windows Firewall blocks network discovery, but you can enable it.
Open Advanced sharing settings by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and Sharing Center, and then, in the left pane, click Change advanced sharing settings.
Click the chevron to expand your current network profile.
Click Turn on network discovery, and then click Save changes. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
I'm going to ask our senior staff if I should make some videos to demo these common activities.
Once you've completed the above steps, login in to http://www.skifta.com and see if your devices appear under the 'my-connections' tab.
Hi there,
I am having the same difficulty. I followed all the steps, but when I find my home location on my android it still says offline. I am running windows 7, WMP 11 and I have an htc evo. I have turned network discovery and I believe I have followed the instructions properly. I am unable to click on "my house" under My Connections on the website. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Hi Bill - did you get this working? I took a look at your account and notice that 'bills phone 1' was connected to 'My house' earlier?
Just to be clear - the desktop client is required if you are outside of your home network and trying to 'shift' media. If that is what you're trying to achieve, then diagnose if your 'local' connection is working first:
1) With both devices on your home network, open the android client and choose '1 - choose a media source'. Under the 'here' tab, check if the WMP 11 computer shows up and select it.
2) If this is working as expected we'll now check that the desktop client is able to connect to the web service. Open a web browser. Navigate to http://www.skifta.com, login and then open 'my-connections'. Check if you can view your PC here.
If not, navigate to http://localhost:9990/admin <<EDIT: This feature was removed. Logs are located in your install directory>.
Navigate to where the 'logs' are located, and mail it to me at support@skifta.com referencing this thread.
As I say, I can see that the service states that you have been connected at some juncture, so let me know how you're getting on.
i already posted on a different topic but this one sounds more like my problem im running win 7 with wmp12 i believe. my phone is samsung gravity smart running android 2.2.2
i got it all running great and it would play all my videos that are the correct mp4 format(a couple hundred), until i turned the power off on my laptop. when i turned it back on my home under remote says status offline. but it would still let me access my videos through the "here" tab on my phone.
it was like this for hours and i tried it several times even from my friends house a couple miles away. it would no longer even let me set it as a connection on this website.
i tried to manually start the program on my computer in case the client didnt automatically start when my computer started up. didnt help. i then tried to uninstall and reinstall the program on my computer in hopes that that would reset it. when it was done installing it said it failed to install correctly and to go to skifta help. so i started typing this.
i just checked my phone and now it says its online again and lets me access my videos remotely from my phone(even though it said it failed to install correctly.) very strange indeed.
i love this app and when it has worked for me it works excellently, but do i have to uninstall and reinstall it every time i turn off my computer. maybe this will help others.
ps you have to have your network set to home and not public or the wmp wont even give you the option to allow remote access.
Hi Blamkrotch.
So - as you've worked out, you need the Desktop client to get 'remote' access.
When you're on the same network, you can use the 'here' tab on your android client to connect to your media server.
When on your home machine, the best way to check if the client is correctly running is to open a web browser and open http://localhost:9990/admin
If this is running OK, the best way to check the status of your remote connection (to save you going to a friends) is to log on to http://www.skifta.com and view the 'my connections' tab.
If this fails there was a problem starting Skifta. Open the services option from control panel and check that the service is started.
Some reasons why you might be seeing Skifta failing after a restart - I've seen a couple of people complaining about this.. but only on windows 7:
1) Windows Firewall has started blocking access to port 9990 due to a restart - to diagnose this, temporarily turn off the windows firewall, stop then restart Skifta - Check you can open http://localhost:9990/admin to see if the service is started. Then see if the connection appears at Skifta.com. Ensure you re-enable your windows firewall.
2) Some malware detection software is blocking Skifta's service from starting. Temporarily disable the malware program and then restart the skifta service. Check you can open http://localhost:9990/admin to see if the service is started. See if the connection appears at Skifta.com. Ensure you re-enable your malware software.
3)A windows update may have caused the skifta service from starting. We'll need logs to determine what that is. Check you can open http://localhost:9990/admin to see if the service is started.
*If you can access http://localhost:9990/admin navigate to the advanced / logs area, and save the logs. Send it to support@skifta.com referencing this thread.
If you cannot, let me know and we'll see what we can work out next. As I say - I've only seen this in windows 7 so far.
Hi,
I tried all the methods and still cannot access my home media from my phone/tablet.
Im using Windows 7 and Samsung GS2 and Tab 10.1
Still stumped. Any help?
We've had a few people experiencing this - here's the checks I recommend:
<snip>
Please check your connection status by logging in at http://www.skifta.com and clicking 'my connections'. This shows your remote connectivity status.
If devices are listed as being online, please try performing a 'shift' (moving media from one device to the other using 'remote').
If the devices are offline we'll need to look at your firewall, router and network setup.
If this is not working via 3G/4G please attempt to connect via a remote wifi network and let us know the results.
With regards to 3G/4G:
We're finding that quite a few mobile operators have a MIG (Mobile internet gateway) in place which either filter content, blocks access or does not allow some http packet modifications via 3G / 4G connections.
Additionally there are ISPs that are known to monitor / block / shape selective traffic - see our latest list at http://forums.skifta.com/topic/list-of-isps-that-block-skifta-remote-traffic#post-2315
Let us know who your provider is.
If you know that your content is not blocked, please send us a log (support@skifta.com) from your device when you see the issue and reference this thread and we'll take a look for you.
Let us know:
1)The results of attempting to shift using remote wifi connectivity
2)Your 3G / 4G operator / ISP
3)Logging (you can take this using the free application 'log collector' available from the marketplace and opening it immediately (literally immediately) after you see the issue.
4)Let us know if you have a standard or custom firmware and your exact device model.
If you think you're router / firewall are the issue - and blocking the traffic to the Skifta site:
5) Do all your devices connect to the router using wifi? Or are any wired?
6) Whats the router model?
7) Does the router have a firewall enabled? Does temporarily disabling the firewall and restarting Skifta resolve the issue?
8) Is there a separate firewall?
9) Check you don't have any proxies in place, or content filtering (stuff like squid). Is there anything unusual about your network handling outbound traffic such as a proxy?
10) Is the network managed by you?
11) Your Router firewall - make sure no outbound ports are blocked: we use ports 80, 90 and 100. There's no need to open any inbound ports.
12) Do a web search to see if your ISP performs any content filtering or proxying on web traffic that may be causing your computer to not connect. I'm also interested to know which ISPs people are using that do cause this issue. An additional note: subscribe to the product updates thread [ http://forums.skifta.com/topic/product-updates ] to be notified if we make networking updates.

So I have Verizon Wireless and Optimum Online (but I am able to host port 80 since I pay extra).
Are you saying that based on the information at:
http://forums.skifta.com/topic/list-of-isps-that-block-skifta-remote-traffic#post-2315
I am unable to use the remote feature because Verizon is blocking something?
I am able to do everything locally via WIFI fine, but when I try to access via 3G, it shows no remote locations. I was going to try to access someone else's WIFI network and see if I can then access my own WIFI. Let's see if that works.
btw, i do have upnp enabled on my router
so i tried to access some random open wifi nearby and then go back to *MY* wifi network and I still saw NO remote devices listed. This is without ever using 3G.
What other settings am I missing? If I have port 80 forwarded to another ip/pc on my network that isn't the one with the Skifta server, is that a problem? Do I have to keep port 80 forwarded to my pc w/ skifta? That presents an issue for some of us hosting websites locally.
Hello ionizer
You don't have to do any port forwarding to Skifta.
As long as you don't have any outgoing connections blocked, Skifta should be able to see the web service.
As I say, the best way to check the status of your remote connection is to log on to http://www.skifta.com and view the 'my connections' tab.
This will allow you to see if your computer (it's not clear to me what OS you're using) and handset is making a remote connection to the web service (via 3G or wifi).
You don't mention the ISP of the random open network - it's very likely that some form of traffic control will be in place on a free open network.
As I say, check your remote connectivity status at 'my connections' and that will help you isolate which of your devices is able to connect to the web service.
Win7.
Open network was the same as my home network - optimum online (Cablevision)
Under my connections, I see sources as both "home pc" and "ionizer's phone 1" both of which have the same things under them:
Dlink-dns320 (NAS drive running UPNP/DLNA)
<my home pc>
Facebook Photos (channel I added)
HTC Flyer (my tablet running skifta)
Media Server (this one only shows up under home pc)
No matter what I select from that source destination, my destinations only include "My Places" which has Ionizer's phone 1 (and two other iterations of Ionizer's phone which are offline)
Where on the my connections site should I see anything about remote connections?
Hello.
I have the same problem.
On WiFi Skifta works greatly.
On remote connection (no difference between 3G or open WiFi hotspot), I can't reach my PC - Status: offline.
My home ISP is Alice Telecom Italia.
My mobile operator is H3G Italy (Three).
I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S with Gingerbread 2.3.6 (JW1 rom) and a Win7 x64-based PC.
Seems to be a fairly common problem with different flavors. I have a ReadyNAS ultra running the Skifta add on. Was working great remotely until it stopped, mid-song, yesterday. I've tried stopping the service and starting, rebooting the NAS, reinstalling the client on my phone. Nothing worked.
This morning I turned on the server on my laptop and left it on. Remoted into my laptop this morning from work and decided to uninstall the add on from frontview and then reinstall the Linux version of skifta through SSH. Running great at the moment but we will see how long that lasts.
d'oh!!! Now it is working. I tried to perform the simplest action you would never do because it's just too simple to work: I restarted the modem/router...
Zipgenius: good to hear that this is working for you.
RockyCJC: It sounds like it could possibly be something to do with your ISP connectivity or routing. Whilst I'm aware that the Skifta service has been busy, I'm not seeing a massive amount of forum posts from other subscribers seeing complete disconnectiopn. I'll monitor this.
ionizer: In regards to remote connections, your media servers (such as home pc) can be connected to from a remote location (such as your work wifi network or via 3G). This gives you a route to also connect to your other UPNP media servers at home.
Is that clearer?
Conal - yesterday I was unable to even access your website from multiple places (work and home) and multiple machines/devices. As parts of the website came up, my username and password would not validate for hours. It wasn't until about 11pm at night that I finally saw the NAS show as an online remote connection. Now today, it is down again. The problems have to be stemming from somewhere and it is very frustrating that I can't figure it out. If my ISP is blocking the connection, it would be nice to at least know so that I can stop going nuts trying to troubleshoot this everyday.
It seems I have the same problem. I read your posts. I have windows seven and samsung galaxy gio. I still get remote media source offline. I set all the network and wmp settings as you and the video suggested. I also tried to disable the windows firewall and my antivirus as well as trying to switch off my wifi router but still nothing. I have infostrada as provider and fastweb on my mobile phone....but the problem is also when I try to remote with the same wifi. I can't access neither from the website in my connection page. It sees my phone but it can't see "my house". Can you help me somehow?
The team are checking into this at the moment.
Hi. Relevant to the same problem, I see the home PC as offline as well.. When trying to access http://localhost:9990/admin I get the following:
HTTP ERROR 404
Problem accessing /admin. Reason:
NOT_FOUND
Powered by Jetty://
Is there something wrong here..?
Same issue as above, (HTTP ERROR 404).
Streaming correctly over wifi but connections not appearing in 'my connections' on the website and no remote media sources found on the app, so no 3g streaming.
BT is the ISP, Three UK is the mobile network provider.
I just edited the above post: http://localhost:9990/admin was removed from the product. The logs are located in the directory you selected to install (dependant on your OS).
In answer to our post earlier in the week, there were some network issues that caused an outage but these are now resolved.
I'm aware that H3G (3) definitely do have a MIG in place that kills Skifta traffic. I'll update the MSP / ISP list to reflect this. We're looking into alternatives for these users - keep an eye on the product updates thread [ http://forums.skifta.com/topic/product-updates ] for more information.
Here's the problem I'm having. I followed the steps in the video, removed Skifta from my Droid device and reinstalled it. Now there are TWO listings for my connections, an old one ([name]'s phone) that is permanently greyed out and a new one ([name]'s phone 1) that is active. When I connect, it is with the new connection, but it's using the old, greyed out connection (without the "1") as the destination and that's showing as offline. I think one of two things will happen if and when the old connection is removed - either everything will work like magic and I'll be able to select from the new connection for my destination, or once the old connection is removed, Skifta will go back to not allowing me to choose a destination at all.
No - what happens is 'your phone' is a 'place' also known as a 'domain'.
When you 'clear data', you remove the data associated with that domain.
When you log in again, a new domain is created: 'your phone 1'.
We can remove that old domain for you - it won't break anything. We don't allow people to remove their own domains (currently) because this may raise more questions if they remove a domain that they need - for instance a desktop connection they depend upon.
Having a legacy domain in your profile doesn't really make any difference to the service and we can remove it for you if it's on your mind.
Now they are both greyed out. Neither one can be accessed.
Have you read through the steps listed earlier in the thread? http://forums.skifta.com/topic/remote-media-source-status-offline#post-2423
Yes, I can access locally through my server, it just seems that when I try to access remotely it doesn't want to cooperate. I can get as far as finding the new connection (as listed above) but the old connection remains greyed out. And when I select a device, it only shows the old connection - the greyed out one. The device is showing up as offline and inaccessible. Is this normal?
Ok - so an experiment to clarify here:
1) Start Skifta on your handset. Connect to 3g (so, turn off wireless). Login to http://www.skifta.com and open 'my connections'. Does the device show as 'online'?
Also - who is the 3g provider?
2) Exit Skifta on your handset. Connect to wifi (so, not using 3g). Restart Skifta. Login to http://www.skifta.com and open 'my connections'. Does the device show as 'online'?
Also - who is the ISP?
In some cases we find that both ISPs and MSPs have blocked the HTTP traffic.
Finally:
3) Let me know if you want me to modify your account to remove the older places.
You must log in to post.
