I have just updated our desktop installers to version 2.68.
This new desktop client is different to the previous version in a few significant ways:
1. It does not autostart any more (either as a Windows/Mac service) or in any other way - you need to start the client manually (or add it to startup-items/etc)
2. It provides a status bar icon when run. This icon right now can be used to start/stop the backend service and has a quick link to our website. You'll notice that there is a greyed out 'Preferences' option. This will soon have some exciting new additions, but for the moment is not needed. For Windows 7 users specifically - it would be better to uninstall the previous client first, then proceed with a fresh installation. For all other operating systems, the new client will perform a correct upgrade.
For any users not wishing to have the GUI experience, you can start the client with the "-start" option, which bypasses this, e.g. for headless linux boxes, you would use something like:
nohup java -jar Skifta.jar -start &
There is no direct need to change your existing desktop client if it is running correctly at this stage, since this release is purely a bug fix release, changing the container in which the client itself runs. All other functionality (at this stage) is unaffected.
As always - please post any problems/questions up on the forums (here) or to support@skifta.com

Skifta Desktop Media server update:
on Thursday Oct 27th, we became aware of a windows/java bug affecting some users storing their media in a location other than their C drives. When used with the Skifta Desktop Media server, content could not be accessed if it was not stored on the C drive. Some new code has been written to workaround this issue and was released on Friday October 28th.
You can get the latest code by stopping your Skifta Desktop client and closing it.
Ensure you are connected to the internet and restart your Skifta Desktop client. Click the Skifta icon in your system tray, select 'start Skifta Service' and set your preferences to point at your content. You should now be able to serve your content on Windows external / USB / logical / physical drives other that 'C'.
Thanks for you patience.

Small update pushed to the Android market just now (labelled as 1.01).
The primary fix in here is around Video's ability in certain circumstances to crash the app. This happened on certain combinations of hardware (Droid X for example) when the player couldn't find a valid codec to process the video and decided it would bail out instead. You'll now get an appropriate message. If you want to play that video, you'll still need to go get a third party player. Have a search - there are some good ones available..
There are a bunch of other fixes in here around startup (did you see a "updating" message that went on for ages?) and some issues around networking.
As always - please report any specific bugs via support@skifta.com and we'll get to it or post them here.
Thanks!

Hi All,
For those of you that have Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.X) already, I've just posted version 1.02 up to the Android market. This fixes a problem that we had that would have prevented it working on ICS.Please report any problems, as per usual, here on the forums or via email to support@skifta.com.

Hi Conal,
Yesterday, my skifta app updated on my smartphone and is now at version 1.05, as advertised on google play. But I haven't seen any changelog for this version.
What changed between 1.03 and 1.05 ?
-

Hello! There's no user features that have changed here - some minor enhancements. Appreciate your diligence tiranor :-)

Also do you guys have control over the version in the Amazon store for Kindle Fire? I got a lovely update with the rotation feature on my A500 tablet, but the one I really need it on is the Kindle Fire and that is not yet available in the Amazon store.
Thanks!
-

Hello! Glad you got the update (1.05). It's a mystery to us though... we haven't released the rotation feature in 1.05.. it's coming in our next major release. My suspicion is that you've received an a500 fragment rotation feature which does the best it can to reorient apps.. In any case, our own version of this is in our next major release.

Dammit...You got me all excited for the kindle fire to get the same update. Okay will wait patiently. (Also note - the A500 has been updated to Ice Cream Sandwich already - perhaps there is built-in functionality for rotation there).

so - it's an ice cream sandwich update :-) I just googled ice cream sandwich auto rotation - there have been some issues since they introduced the feature. Hold on tight though - the new release is coming soon

My ISP is MTS Allstream in Manitoba Canada. It is also a Dynamic DNS if that helps. Its a pretty standard internet setup.
Any ideas??

Hi there,
version 1.51 available on google play, what's the changelog since 1.50 ?
-
Posted 10 months ago
Version 1.50 of the app was a massive upgrade and although we did a lot of testing there were always going to be some issues when it was released.
Version 1.51 contains fixes to the first issues we identified. Specifically, a problem related to browsing a directory with very large video files, a networking problem stopping the app working on Archos devices, a compatibility issue Samsung TVs and some other minor fixes.
The next version will contain fixes which address a Samsung Galaxy S3 issue and compatibility with Serviios & Mediatomb media servers and any other problems we identify.
Basically, there will be a series of quick releases as we identify and fix problems.
To answer your question from a few days ago, no, there is no limit to the number of sources.

Does this mean that skifta can be started as a service at boot rather than having to manually enable it or is the above fix more of a compatibility thing? Cheers -
Posted 10 months ago
Skifta desktop as a service is a feature that could be coming in the next major release. The serviio update allows better handling of the responses that some media servers return. As I'm sure you can appreciate, this is software and not all media server developers code the same responses so we sometimes have to build in some additional condition handling.
