I don't suppose there's a Dalvik version of the Skifta desktop app out there, is there? I need to install it on my Logitech Revue...

Logitech's Revue: Skifta desktop app

You'd need to get your device on to marketplace in order to get the app. Some subscribers who have devices with Linux installed are able to run the desktop client..
I've not tried the revue myself. I hope those limited options help though. -

Revue does have Android Market ever since it's been upgraded to Honeycomb. My issue it's not that I may be unable to run a Skifta client on the Revue, it's just that I need to run the Skifta desktop app (i.e. Skifta server) on the Revue. The Revue doesn't exactly have Java, but, just like any Android device, it runs Dalvik.

Download the Skifta app from the marketplace.
The device app also acts as a media server, so that should resolve your issue ;-) -

Well, it may just be that I have finally found the answer to a question I've been posting all over the Internet for the past 4-5 months: Is there a media server app for Android? Most people were looking at me as if I were coming from another planet. I've been looking at Twonky, Subsonic, Plex, Tversity, DirectVLC, you name it. Closest I could get was DirectVLC, only that one works only with VLC, and there's no VLC client for Android(!).
Anyway, I'll give Skifta a try, and report back. One issue might be that Skifta may not be compatible with Revue/GoogleTV (https://developers.google.com/tv/android/), which is something that you may want to look into. As such, I may have to sideload the .apk onto the Revue, which means that I'll have to first download it onto a compatible device, and then transfer it on the Revue. Just to spare me this detour, I don't suppose you could just send me the .apk in an email attachment, could you?
Many thanks, and I'll report back.

Unfortunately we're unable to issue the APK. You may also want to try bubbleupnp.

Don't worry about not being able to supply the .apk file, I have my sources.
As for BubbleUPnP, I'm not sure if this one works with GoogleTV either. Moreover (and more importantly), I need some clarification from you: BubbleUPnP does not stream onto the
Internet without installing the BubbleUPnP server piece on some Linux or Windows computer, which is a luxury I do not have. I understand that the Skifta Android application does that without having an extra software piece installed somewhere else, is that so? -

Yes, that's correct. So here's the thing - I'm aware that Google does restrict the apps available to that device in the same way as amazon does for kindle. You are correct about bubble upnp.
And loving the 'sources' comment :-) -

Well, I installed Skifta on my cellphone (GalaxyS2), and on my wife's cellphone (GalaxyS), and managed to stream music (kinda stuttery, though that's understandable, given that I am streaming non-transcoded FLAC(!)) over the Internet (HSxPA) from one cellphone to the other, which is something I've been looking to do since ... forever. Even more interestingly, the server (my wife's GalaxyS) serves the music that's on my E4200 router's DLNA server(!). Quite the streaming feat, if you ask me!
I will attempt to move the music hard drive to my Revue during the weekend, install Skifta on the Revue, and see how FLAC streaming goes without the middleman (i.e. my wife's GalaxyS)--hopefully get less stuttery playback. Will report back on how Revue handles things.
Many thanks for a wonderful piece of SW! Skifta is the only SW that allows Internet streaming from Android to Android, and I tried all the others. Awesome job!!!

Alright, here's an update on running Skifta on my Revue: It was interesting to see that Skifta did, indeed, install pretty smoothly on the Revue (GoogleTV 3.1), and worked fine for the most part. Awesome!
Two major annoyances though:
1. The Revue does not show up in the "remote media source" list, thus making remote streaming impossible (remote access is the primary factor in my choosing Skifta in the first place);
2. Scanning the attached USB drive takes forever, and sometimes (though not always!) the scanning process returns an empty list (go figure!); no such issues happen with BubbleUPnP(!), which makes me believe that this is a Skifta issue, not a Revue/GoogleTV problem. All in all, I'd love to see some dev effort focusing on GoogleTV/Revue, especially since it looks like GoogleTV is poised to flood the market in 2012.

I'll put this to the team.

So, what did the team say? Any chance they get to look into adapting Skifta for Google TV anytime soon?
-

Thanks for the reminder. We looked into this and the restriction is maintained by Google - they will need to allow the app for their device. They don't allow it currently - but you never know - Skifta arrived for kindle and may very well be allowed for Google TV in the near future. You'll need to lobby the google TV team! :-D

Thanks for looking into this. Surely, in the meantime nothing should stop you from making Skifta compatible with GoogleTV, despite the fact that it does not yet show up in the market for GoogleTV devices, right? What say you? I've tried to describe above the main issues that bother me when running Skifta on the Revue (GoogleTV 3.1), so why don't you try to fix those please? At this point, the fact that Skifta is not allowed on the Android/GoogleTV market should be of less importance: what should matter is that it works.

Understood. So there are a couple of points here.. and it's not necessarily 'fix' but in some instances some knowledge about how DLNA is handled by different companies.
q1) Revue does not show up:
* This is because the revue does not announce itself as a renderer.. either because google have deemed they do not 'want' it too, or because the feature is turned off. Check that it has an option to broadcast as a DMR via UPNP / DLNA - we don't have one of these so it's a bit difficult for me to be more accurate.
Alternatively, have you tried this in the Skifta app:
1) Choose media source > (select the device)
2) Choose a media player > Play on unlisted player
Then browse from the Google TV using a suitable app (a upnp or dlna media browser) and look for a Skifta source.q2) Media lists do not show up.
We've acknowledged that huuuge lists of content (literally thousands of items such as MP3s) do cause an issue. This can be because the media server (eg PS3 media server, XBMC, etc) 'times out' sending the media list, or because Skifta exceeds the maximum block of memory allocated to it by the Handset OS and so ceases to display. We're addressing the latter case. Finally, I'm able to confirm that we have tested on a wide range of new and different platforms, but obviously I'm not able to confirm publicly 'what' those are.. be sure to watch out for Skifta announcements (even create a news alert) to find out when the new hardware gets listed. Really appreciate your interest in the product!
