PS3 media server is your man. Set the transcode options (it will then transcode all videos) to mp4 with a type of h264 and I think you'll have what you're after ;-)

Hmm. I guess I'm misunderstanding W7's transcoding abilities. All of the initial research on W7 forums led me to believe that W7 would perform on-the-fly transcoding to a format compatitble to the device.

More research leads me to believe that this is specific to MCE devices, and that auto-transcoding to DLNA devices only happens on a "push" (sync to device) from W7. WMC transcode settings don't allow a specific format to be set, just "as required by this device" (WMP/Options/Devices/Properties/Quality).

It looks like I will have to investigate other DMS programs which will auto-transcode on a pull.

1) Content hosted on a windows 7 server:
-- You can use the kindle fire running Skifta to play from your windows machines. [ http://howto.cnet.com/8301-11310_39-20077603-285/how-to-stream-music-from-your-pc-to-android-remotely/ ]

2) Windows media sharing transcoding:
-- WMP doesn't have any transcoding as far as I'm aware. Is this a plugin you're running or can you tell me where you are setting this option and which version of WMP you're running?

3) Skifta acts as a DMC:
Yes, it does pass media on to the player - Skifta also acts as a DMS and a DMR..

4) DMP:
As you say Skifta simply delivers the media and relies on your renderer being able to support that media type. If, however, you have the option to transcode your media with windows media player, why not set the video codec type to mp4 / h264p10/aac? The stock video types supported by the kindle have been deliberately restricted by the vendors unless you install a specific video player adding additional codec support.
Alternatively, Ps3 media server lets you set the codec within your file container to be your desired type - so why not use this to set video codecs to h264/aac?

5) "properly reports the Fire's rendering format capabilities to Win/7"
Windows Media Player doesn't build a profile 'server side' for any devices or user agents as far as I'm aware - it just builds the entire list of content and returns it. If you can point me at an article that states otherwise, I'll gladly withdraw that comment...
I think the reliance is then to filter this client side, and in the case of Skifta, it uses your devices registration of intents to filter through the content.

Are you having a specific issue that you want us to address?

There seems to be quite a few of us who want to used a Kindle Fire as a player for local content hosted on a media server running either Windows 7 or Windows Home Server.

Windows 7's built in media sharing will automatically transcode streaming content to DLNA devices if the supported media types don't exist on the player.

Skifta acts as a DMC (Digital Media Controller), so it simply passes media on to any registered player. This prevents Win7 from performing the auto-transcode, since a DMC doesn't report the rendering capabilities of the player.

WANTED: DMP (Digital Media Player) mode for Skifta running on a stock Android/Kindle Fire tablet which properly reports the Fire's rendering format capabilities to Win/7. This will allow Win/7 to trancode Android-unsupported formats/codecs/etc so that those of us with existing Windows media servers and LARGE media libraries can use the Fire as a display device without having to go through and re-code all of our existing media.
